THE AMAZING PORCELAIN MDVANII
(IN PROCESS)
The all so-precious Porcelain Mdvanii
Introduced in Spring, 1994 with the limited-edition series Sirène, the porcelain Mdvanii opened a brand new era in BillyBoy* doll creations. Porcelain achieved the natural evolution of Mdvanii towards a superb quality. Made in France in the finest porcelain, delicate and infinitely precious, the Mdvanii doll (and her friends) are also, to our knowledge, the only articulated fashion dolls of this scale made in the world today in traditionally-made porcelain. This would not include commercially-made porcelain dolls of existing vinyl dolls which is an entirely different process nor the artisan or doll designer-made creations, beautiful in their own right but representing children, babies, fantasy dolls in various other scales.
The porcelain Mdvanii is about the same size as the resin Mdvanii. It was first made in a pale shade of porcelain, later with a more rosy tone. She is articulated at the arms, legs, head and, a novelty, at the waist. Unlike the resin doll, her head can also move up and down, which allowed brand new expressions for Mdvanii. The body is hand-assembled like traditional porcelain dolls, with elastics. Another difference with the resin dolls, the gold tag is now placed in the middle of the back. Her bottom is marked with the inscription “BillyBoy* 1994- Déposé” in the porcelain.
Her face has a softer definition, with a less accentuated nose line and nostrils. The porcelain dolls were the first ones to have blush make up on their cheek bones. It is interesting to know that Sirène Mdvanii has different legs, with a different curve. This first look, was judged too “human-like”. The legs were re-sculpted and re-moulded, and all the other porcelain dolls have the traditional Mdvanii legs. So only 25 of these special “legged” Mdvanii dolls exist in the world!
The hands have a superb definition with graciously posed fingers and a more sensual movement. The left hand has no longer the same movement but hangs down, the inside of the hand showing. The doll can hold a purse in either hand. Another version of the left arm was created with the inside of the hand not showing. One or the other are mounted on the porcelain dolls, creating variation.
The traditional articulation system with elastics allows the porcelain head to move backwards and forwards,as well as from one side to another, unlike with the resin head which could only rotate from left to right and back. It allows a great variety of alluring poses and gives Mdvanii a range of sensitive expressions that could not be as subtly achieved with the resin Mdvanii doll.
The innovative sculpted-on hairdos, used as definite styles or combined with removable wigs, contribute, along with the personalized new make-up styles, in making the porcelain Mdvanii doll a fascinating creation of beauty and meditation.
